Painting Lightning Effects

  1. Draw the lightning on the outside of the body with a thin black non-permanent marker.
  2. Apply 2 layers of 1 1/2" wide masking tape to the inside of the body over the lightning.
  3. Use an Xacto knife to cut out the 1/8" or so wide lightning design.
  4. Use plastic or paper to attach to the outer edge of the bottom layer of masking tape.
  5. This will prevent any over spray from getting on the body.
  6. Apply 2 coats of white for the lightning.
  7. Back it with 1 coat of silver.

  8. Let it dry for 15 to 30 minutes or blow dry it on low for about 5 minutes...

  9. Peel up the top layer of masking tape and discard it.
  10. Peel up the bottom layer of masking tape and plastic and re-use it.
  11. Apply the bottom layer of masking tape 1/8" or so from the edge of the lightning.
  12. Apply 1 mist coat of white for the glow effect from 12" or so away.
  13. Do not back this coat!

  14. Let it dry for 15 to 30 minutes or blow dry it on low for about 5 minutes...

  15. Peel up the bottom layer of masking tape and plastic discard it.
  16. Paint the remaining area with any scheme you want and back it with 1 coat of silver.
